Bioarchaeology

Our bioarchaeological research combines the study of archaeology with branches of the natural and physical sciences to address questions of health and well-being, diet, ecology, subsistence strategies and natural and human-induced environmental impacts in the past.

Heritage and Locality

The South West region's historic landscape offers unrivalled opportunities to explore its archaelogy, landscape and histories, and the myths and stories associated with particular sites, such as Tintagel which was, according to medieval legend, the birthplace of King Arthur.

Landscape Archaeology

Our landscape research is characterised by its interdisciplinarity, methodological innovation, commitment to fieldwork, and relevance to modern day society. Many of our research projects involve active collaboration with scholars from other disciplines.

Material Culture

Material culture and social agency research at the University of Exeter blends theoretical and methodological concerns with interdisciplinary perspectives, aiming at understanding the relationship between people and things both in the past and in the contemporary world.

Socio-economic History

There is a long tradition of Economic and Social History at the University of Exeter. Particular strengths in Economic and Social History at Exeter are early modern history (1500-1800), maritime history, and the use of manuscript documents for quantitative and qualitative research.
