Postgraduate Researcher
History

Zara Money is a social economic postgraduate researcher in the Archaeology and History department. Her doctoral work is being funded by the Economic Social Research Council studentship 2024-29 for the thesis 'Along the Shoreline: Women’s roles in the early modern maritime economy of the West Country'. This study uses a mixed-method approach, combining qualitative analysis of probate documents and petitions into large quantitative datasets to identify statistical trends in women’s economic roles in early modern Devon. This thesis is supervised by Professor Jane Whittle and Dr James Davey.

Her research generally assesses women's work, specialising in British fishwives' physical and economic contributions to the maritime sphere between 1500-1750. This research addresses stereotypes about women in contemporary literature and visual culture, rebalancing the actions of real women with archival data analysis. Further research seeks to establish the global impact of British fishwives on the international fishing trade of the early modern world, specifically the Newfoundland trade.
