History
Shunran is a PhD Candidate in History at the University of Exeter, specialising in medieval saint cults and miracles. His doctoral research examines saintly truth-telling behaviour in hagiographical writings from 12th- and 13th-century England. Drawing on Foucault's theory of parrhesia, the study analyses the relationship between the construction of saintly authority, textual representation, and the ethical view of truth-telling during the High Middle Ages. His interests also include intellectual history, digital palaeography and codicology studies, and Sino-Western comparative research.
Shunran holds an MA in Medieval History from the University of Edinburgh and a BA in World History from Capital Normal University. His current research is fully funded by the China Scholarship Council (CSC) and the Limetree Capital PhD Scholarship Fund. He also serves as the Convenor and Coordinator of the Global China Research Centre at the University of Exeter.
